The Growth of America’s Electric Truck Fleets

According to Freightliner, there may be as many as 54,000 electric semi trucks on American roads by 2025. An article in Freightwaves quotes an American Transportation Research Institute study that says electrifying America’s long-haul trucking fleet would require as much as 10% of the electricity flowing through the grid.

Given current trends, it should be no surprise that we are already seeing demand for electric truck parking. Given that charging an electric truck takes longer than refueling with diesel fuel, it’s only natural that electric truck parking should include EV charging station infrastructure wherever possible.

What Does The Future Hold For Electric Trucks?

The trucking industry is full of good, responsible corporate citizens and we all care about the environment — but at the end of the day, trucking companies must maintain profitability or else they cease to exist. Where electric trucks are concerned though, it looks like the math works.   

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab did a study in 2021 and found that an electric tractor-trailer with a 375-mile range would cost 13% less to operate (lower overall total cost of ownership. According to their figures at the time, a diesel model would average $1.73 per mile, whereas the electric truck and trailer on the same route would cost $1.51 per mile. That would add up to a net savings of $200,000 over a 15-year period. 

So it would seem that at least for short-haul trucking and even the shallow end of the pool in long-haul trucking, electric rigs could be more profitable. With more and more electric truck parking facilities coming online, we’re taking a guardedly optimistic view of electric trucking. Who knows, the demands of long-haul trucking might even help spur on more EV battery development and electric grid infrastructure improvements that will benefit passenger cars and consumers as well.
